CHAPTER 8

We stopped for lunch and then started our hike. I was ready for something much, much less exciting than the raft ride! I was feeling a little like this whole trip had gotten off on the wrong hiking boot. I was hoping that we weren’t cursed!

Zoe, MJ, and I were in the middle of the pack, hiking together. We kept hanging out after rafting.

After about a half hour and five fully sung camp songs, MJ said, “So when do we get to the rest stop?”

“What rest stop? We’re in the woods,” I replied.

“No, I mean, I asked Angus and Lars where I could go to the bathroom on the hike and Angus said, ‘At the rest stop,’” MJ explained.

“Um, MJ?” I said. “Our counselors were totally teasing you. There is no rest stop. There’s the woods.”

“Ew. No way!” Zoe yelped. “Ew.”

“It’s not a big deal,” I said. “You just find a place behind some bushes and you squat.”

“Not a big deal to you. You’re the Camping Goddess. I go to actual buildings when I’m on vacation. We don’t squat to pee. Ew! I don’t even have any toilet paper,” MJ said.

I laughed. “If you really have to go, then squatting’s kind of your only option. And I have tissues,” I said, producing a package from my pack.

“Well, I really have to go,” MJ said.

“Me too,” Zoe added. “Right now, behind a tree doesn’t sound so bad.”
